While most Internet access is delivered via a cable,
the term cable Internet access refers to a service provided typically
by a telecom provider who runs a cable to a property with a view to
providing telephone, TV and Internet services.
Internet access via a cable does not require a
modem, but a box that is a form of network card that is then plugged
into a PC.
Cable access is restricted to areas serviced by
cable operators, which are mainly more densly populated areas. Cable
services can run at speeds up to 30 Mbps. However, cable companies will
cap the speed, frequently at 512Kbps[download]/128Kbps[upload]. Performance
& speed tends to degrade the more people are using the cable Internet
access in your area.
