Broadband users want computer security from ISPs
High-speed Internet users want service providers to help them secure their home computers, according to a survey and analysis by broadband research firms Parks Associates and TeleChoice.
The study found that the hassles associated with installing, configuring and maintaining anti-virus, firewall and parental control products keep many residential end-users from purchasing, or implementing the correct use of these products.
Additionally, results indicated that most residential users would prefer to purchase online security products as a suite of *services,* deployed from within the broadband providers network rather than their own PC hard drive. Tom Donnelly, Co-Founder and VP sales and marketing for Sandvine Incorporated commented:
“While residential broadband adoption continues to grow, its associated risks have aggravated fears that the high-speed Internet connection can be an unguarded point-of-entry for evildoers.”
“This study shows that residential subscribers want to utilise – and would be willing to pay for – their service providers technological expertise in order to stop viruses, intrusions and objectionable content in the network, before they can enter the home”
The study also suggests that attracting new access subscribers with robust, secure services can provide organic growth for service provider revenues. Additionally, up-selling security services to existing access subscribers will grow average revenue per unit (ARPU). Claudia J. Bacco, president of TeleChoice, added:
“Service providers must adopt strategies that bridge todays need to reinforce acquisition and retention, with the growing need to improve protections for residential subscribers against cyber attack.”
“Our analysis of the Parks data clearly illustrates the opportunity to achieve both goals by selling network-based security services as a value-add to the basic broadband sub.”
Sandvine has created a services deployment platform that allows broadband service providers to deliver network-based anti-virus, parental control and firewall services to residential subscribers from within the network. To find out more, visit Sandvine online at www.sandvine.co.co.uk
