Spain targets 8 million broadband

Spain?s Ministry of Industry hopes the country will reach more than 8 million broadband internet lines by the end of this year.

In 2003, Spain had only 2.1 million broadband accesses. The country is one of Europe?s least-penetrated as far as broadband goes, with the service relatively expensive.

The ?Plan Avanza” for the Information Society has allocated EUR1,440 million this year to broaden broadband penetration in the whole country especially in rural areas. And by 2008 this amount will be up to EUR1,800 million.

By the end of this year, the Ministry of Industry hopes Spain will have 18.4 internet connections for every 100 inhabitants compared with five connections for every 100 inhabitants in 2004. And it is also targeting average speeds of 3 Mbps.
