HSDPA to Dominate 3G Mobile Broadband Market in Coming Years

HSDPA and related HSPA technologies will dominate the high-end mobile broadband market over the next five years, accounting for about 70% of global 3G deployments, said Juniper Research in a recent forecast.

Globally, almost one third of mobile phone subscribers, or over 1-billion people, will use some kind of mobile broadband technology by 2012, according to Juniper, driven by strong demand in North America, Western Europe, and some Asia Pacific markets.

The take up of 3G broadband services could be limited, however, by the cost of compatible mobile devices, whether they be cell phones, laptops, data cards, or other consumer electronics. HSPA and its closest third-generation rival, EV-DO, are extremely device-based technologies.
