SoftScan announced today that spam levels has marginally dropped from last month?s high of 90.3%, but still remained at an alarming 89.09% of all emails scanned. Virus levels continue to be low at just 0.6%.
Although a relatively uneventful month for both spam and viruses, the fact that spam continues to remain high demonstrates the persistence of spammers and the success rates of their ?email campaigns?.
?One only has to look at the reports of the so called ?spam king? being sued by MySpace to realise that something is wrong with the system. If someone can be ordered to give back over $4m for a previous offence and still go on to allegedly commit similar actions again, it shows that the punishment was by no means a deterrent,? comments Diego d?Ambra, CTO of SoftScan. ?A tougher stance by law enforcement globally, alongside educating users to the risks they take if they respond to these emails, is required.?
Virus levels remain steady accounting for just 0.6% of total email scanned.
The top five virus families in March 07 were:
1 – phishing: 92.09%
2 ? netsky: ? 3.38%
3 ? mytob: 1.27%
4 ? bagle: 0.86%
5 ? stration: 0.56%
