SoftScan announced today that nearly 90% of emails scanned during July were spam. Although it acknowledges that the percentage increase last month is due to less legitimate email as users are on holiday, rather than more spam, SoftScan points out that for those users without spam protection it isn?t just their laundry that needs cleaning when they return, but their inbox too.
?It?s not just the extended coffee breaks sharing holiday snaps that cuts into productivity when users come back to work,? says Bo Engelbrechtsen, corporate communications manager of SoftScan. ?Clearing the average inbox of junk mail can take quite a time and when you factor in the additional storage space it took up during the holiday period, it?s easy to see that spam costs businesses dearly.?
The highest percentage of spam stopped in July was 95.95% on Saturday 15th, but SoftScan say that generally spam levels have reach a plateau at around the 85% mark. This level has now been steady for the last eighteen months, only rising during traditional holiday periods when there is less business email.
Virus levels rose marginally this month to 0.44% from 0.36% in June, but are still significantly low as first reported in May?s figures. However, this only demonstrates a change in malware writers? tactics, not that viruses and other related malware are on their way out.

1 Phishing:63.57%
2 Netsky: 10.02%
3 Mytob: 9.64%
4 Bagle 7.17%
5 Mydoom 3.31%
