Nominet seeks to rais standards in UK internet industry

A survey of registrars by Nominet, the .uk domain name registry, has revealed that two-thirds agreed with the need for improved self-regulation in the domain name industry and over 80 percent supported a code of conduct for registrars.

As a result, Nominet is inviting views from all stakeholders and interested parties on how best it might raise standards in the domain name industry.

There are over 3,800 registrars for .uk domain names, more than any other suffix. This has resulted in huge customer choice and competition in the industry, allowing it to flourish. However, when combined with low requirements for becoming a registrar, it has sometimes led to user problems.

Lesley Cowley, Nominet’s Chief Executive said: “Most registrars provide a high standard of service to their customers. However, they feel that the poor standard of service by a few registrars results in poor perceptions of the industry as a whole. Our objective is to encourage debate about this and how we might address these issues. Essentially, Nominet wants to build on and enhance the reputation of .uk, ensuring it remains a domain in which people have confidence and trust.”

The consultation discusses the possible creation of achievable standards for good practice and a possible ‘gold standard’ to help customers choose between registrars.

Nominet is inviting feedback on its Raising Internet Standards consultation paper, which can be found via the latest news section on the Nominet web site at: http://www.nominet.org.uk, to guage views and opinions on the proposed changes and the impact they could have on registrars, businesses and society in the UK. This consultation is open until 30 April 2006. The consultation process is designed to ensure that policy decisions reflect the interests of the UK internet community and are representative of the broadest range of different stakeholder groups.
