New York ISP Panix said today they have regained full control of their domain, Panix.com, after it was “hijacked” last Friday. The domain name had been transferred to a company in Australia throwing the Internet Service Provider into chaos. It not known at this stage who instigated the transfer. It could of been a stupid prank or an attempt to get money from the company by selling the domain back to them at a high price.
It’s important to lock all domains so they cannot be transferred away by an unscrupulous individual. ICANN recently changed the rules of domain transfers as requests are automatically approved after five days for transfer if there is no reply from the domain owner to reject it. Locking the domain will prevent this.
