BT adds modem-router as standard with broadband
For the first time since the launch of Broadband from BT, customers can now set up a home network as standard, thanks to the addition of the BT Voyager 205 ADSL router.
With a Voyager 205 customers can connect two computers, (or a computer and an Xbox or PlayStation2), to a single broadband connection at no extra cost. This connectivity allows simultaneous internet access and online gaming or the creation of a small network between two computers. Moreover, the Voyager 205 comes with its own power supply. This means the games console can be connected online, without the need for the primary PC to be switched on.
The easy to install router modem marks a first for broadband customers, who previously could only buy a home network solution separately from BT?s home networking range.
The Voyager 205 is equipped with one ethernet and one USB port, thus allowing customers to attach two devices (computers or games consoles) via USB 1.1. If two PCs are attached to the router, customers will be able to transfer files without using removable media such as a CDR or USB key devices; customers will also be able to share a printer.
The router is already configured for UK ADSL connections, making it easy to set up. However, customers can also configure their own LAN/WAN settings via a simple web browser window. It also incorporates a firewall to protect against unauthorised access, that can be activated automatically or tailored to suit individual needs.
Those already running a home network will still be able to attach the gateway PC to the ethernet connection on the router. It will automatically manage and share the internet connection between all the computers available on the network.
?Many households increasingly have more than one PC or internet-enabled device,? said Duncan Ingram, managing director, broadband and internet services, BT Retail.. ?The frustration, up until now, has been that only one could ever be used at any one time. This is set to change.
?The launch of Voyager 205 is part of our ongoing strategy to enhance the customers? broadband experience through services, content and applications – in this case by giving them the flexibility to share their broadband connection between multiple devices. It means customers won?t outgrow the capability that broadband offers them. It really lets customers tap into what the internet can offer and gives the whole family the chance to experience the true power of broadband.?
