Vodafone Australia announced earlier this week their plans to implement initiatives to establish a ?Vodafone-only? 3G network. Through construction of the multi-million dollar network, Vodafone hopes to globalise Australia?s 3G services and ultimately increase the data transfer speeds of WAP. Vodafone additionally hopes the new infrastructure will enable the provision of more 3G applications than are currently available with Hutchinson?s 3G.
Partnership rumours for establishing the network are currently circulating, with Telstra and Ericsson leading the pack to assist the implementation of 3G. In a press release Grahame Maher, Managing Director of Vodafone Australia, denounced a partnership during this initial development stage.
?Despite our will to enter into a network partnering agreement, at this stage we are not satisfied that this approach would meet the collective needs of our customers, our shareholders, the broader community, or our business. 3G is the future for Vodafone and quite simply we need to get going.?The door will however be kept open for other operators to join us in the future, although no firm commitment has been made at this point,? Maher said.
The Australian?s IT section revealed Ericsson?s belief that they will win the tender to build the 3G network ? converse of Maher?s statement. Presently, Ericsson is Hutchinson?s main provider of equipment for their network.
Vodafone?s mobile phone subscribers currently comprise 25% of the world?s phone users, 2.59million of them are Australian residents.
?Our willingness to move into the 3G space sooner rather than later, demonstrates our commitment to customers and to meeting the growing demand for mobile multimedia services in Australia,? Maher said.
Vodafone projects 2005 for the release of 3G ? until this date subscribers will have to endure the 2.5G network.
